The cable car climbs the limestone massif that rises out of the plain south of town in just eight minutes. Step out at the top and Salzburg and its lakes lie flat on one side, with ridge after ridge of rock on the other. A 20-minute walk over rocky ground takes you to the summit cross at Geiereck, open in every direction. On a clear day the fortress and town look small enough to hold in your hand; in cloud you see nothing, so check the webcam first.
