Look up from almost anywhere in Salzburg and this white wall of a castle is there. It has stood for more than 900 years without ever being taken, so the inside is big and maze-like. The red funicular gets you in within a minute, or you can walk up in about 20. The real prize is the view from the terraces: cathedral domes and Old Town roofs on one side, and on the other a flat plain ending at the sheer face of the Untersberg. Plenty of people go up late in the day and come down after the town lights come on.
