Built in the Nazi era on a mountaintop, it's now a restaurant. A dedicated bus climbs a 6.5 km cliffside road closed to private cars, then you walk a tunnel into the rock and ride a brass-lined lift 124 m further up. The doors open on the Königssee far below and the Berchtesgaden Alps all around. The history is heavy; it's the road and the view that stay with you more than the building. You cross into Germany, so bring your passport.
