Since late 2023 the Sundhnúkur crater row north of Grindavík has split open nine times. The latest eruption started on 16 July 2025 and ended on 5 August 2025. There hasn't been one since, but in its 30 September 2026 update the Icelandic Met Office said magma is still accumulating under Svartsengi, the ground is slowly rising, and a new intrusion and eruption remain the most likely scenario. Go now and you'll see raw black lava fields and protective barriers from the road to the Blue Lagoon. Grindavík itself was evacuated and access has been restricted; the first phase of a revised safety risk assessment for the town was published on 1 October 2026.
