Milky sky-blue water steams in the middle of a black, moss-covered lava field. The bottom is soft white silica mud that squishes between your toes, and once everyone has slapped on the silica mask included in the ticket, the whole lagoon is full of identical white faces. Drink from the in-water bar in hand, drifting through the steam: that's the picture. Magma is still building up under nearby Svartsengi, so the lagoon can shut at short notice when an eruption looks likely.
