Grey concrete columns step up the hilltop like the basalt cliffs on Iceland's coast, which is exactly what the architect was copying. Inside it's surprisingly bare and white: tall windows, a huge pipe organ and footsteps that echo. Take the lift up the tower and the clock-face windows frame a toy town of red, blue and green tin roofs, with the sea and Mount Esja beyond. Out front, Leif Erikson stands on his plinth, the Norseman who got to America first.
