About 20 minutes east on State Highway 6, just past the Kawarau bungy

Follow the Kawarau Gorge in and the vines appear in a narrow valley between rocky schist hills. It's one of the cooler corners of Central Otago, known above all for Pinot Noir, and most wineries pour a flight at the cellar door. Gibbston Valley Winery has a wine cave cut into the rock that you can tour. Sit out on a vineyard terrace with a cheese board and the afternoon slows down in a way Queenstown rarely does.
