Begun as a Romanesque church in the 12th and 13th centuries and added to in Gothic and baroque times, it looks like a fortress outside and glitters with gilded altars inside. The paid cloister is lined with blue azulejos, and its upper terrace looks out over the old-town roofs. The best part is free, though: stand at the railing by the horseman statue in the front square and the roofs of Ribeira tumble down to the river, with the Dom Luís I Bridge and the Serra do Pilar monastery in the same frame.
