This is the neighbourhood where the Douro runs out into the Atlantic. Follow the riverside path to the palm-lined Passeio Alegre garden, and at the end of the breakwater stands the little Felgueiras lighthouse, built in 1886. On rough days the spray from the waves shoots higher than the lighthouse itself. Walk north along the shore and you pass rock pools, sea-water swimming pools and cafés, with the sun setting straight out over the ocean. After the narrow old-town lanes, the sky here feels enormous.
