Just below the airport, the long run of sand from Nai Yang to Mai Khao is a national park. Pine-like casuarinas line the back of the beach and throw shade over snack stalls and mats. Compared with Patong's forest of parasols, people are spread thin. Planes pass low overhead, which is half the entertainment. In the rainy season the surf can be rough enough to rule out swimming.
