Through the gilded gates and along the King's apartments you reach the 73-metre Hall of Mirrors: 357 mirrors on one wall, garden windows on the other, and in the afternoon light bounces right across the room. Behind the palace the formal gardens slope down to the Grand Canal, far bigger than they look, too big to cover on foot. A good plan is to do the gardens and canal first while you have energy, then enter the palace at your booked time. Add the Trianon and the Queen's Hamlet and it becomes a full day.
