The park sits on the Mabuni hill where the last fighting of the Battle of Okinawa took place. The Cornerstone of Peace carries the names of everyone who died, civilian or soldier, whatever their nationality, cut into dark stone. The peace memorial museum next door holds testimonies and records. The sea below is brilliantly blue and the air is hushed, and visitors tend to speak less as they walk.
