Families planted fukugi trees around their houses to break the sea wind, and over a few centuries they've grown into green tunnels over every lane in the village. Step onto the narrow sandy paths and sunlight drops in spots through the leaves, with red-tiled roofs peeking over the walls. Walk to the end of a lane and the sea suddenly opens up. People rent bikes at the entrance to potter around, and some take a water-buffalo cart. It's close to Churaumi, so most people do both the same day.
