Past the ticket booth you climb stairs and the stone walls start to snake along the ridge. This was the seat of the northern kings before the Ryukyu Kingdom, so the walls are huge, and from the top the East China Sea opens up below. In late January and early February Japan's earliest cherry blossoms line the path in deep pink. Almost no buildings survive, just stone and wind, and a full loop takes about an hour.
