A village sealed inside its ramparts floats above olive groves and cypress-dark hills. Through the gate there are no cars, just one polished stone street running the length of the village, lined almost entirely with galleries and workshops, some lanes paved with pebbles set in flower patterns. Chagall is buried in the cemetery at the far end, and La Colombe d'Or by the entrance is famous for the painters, Picasso and Miró among them, said to have paid for meals with art. Walk the ramparts for views over the hills all the way to the sea.
