Walk a little further up the hill from the Matisse Museum and you reach the Franciscan monastery. A side gate beside the church opens onto terraced rose beds, and from the balustrade the rooftops and the sea spread out below. Matisse is buried in the cemetery next door, so many visitors fold the two together. Unlike the beach, most people on the benches here live nearby.
