Matisse spent the last three decades or so of his life in Nice and is buried on this hill. The museum is a 17th-century red villa standing in an old olive grove, its painted trompe-l'oeil window frames photo-worthy before you even get inside. The collection runs from early oils to the late paper cut-outs, plus sketches and studies for the Rosary Chapel in Vence. Next door are the remains of a Roman amphitheatre and the gardens of Cimiez monastery, so a museum visit turns into an afternoon on the hill. It isn't big; an hour and a half is plenty.
