Climb the broad steps off Fifth Avenue, pass the columns, and you soon realise half a day won't cover even one wing. Most people head first to the Temple of Dendur, moved stone by stone into a glass-walled hall, then up to the European paintings, where Van Gogh, Monet and Rembrandt hang room after room. The Arms and Armor court, with its line of armoured knights on horseback, is another favourite. Plenty of reviewers spent five hours and only managed Egypt and the European galleries, so pick two or three sections before you go in.
