Hostelling International's New York hostel on Amsterdam Avenue in the Upper West Side. A block-long late-19th-century brick building holds dorms from 4 to 14 beds plus private and family rooms. Free events like welcome parties, comedy nights and walking tours run often, so solo travellers start talking fast. A big back patio and Central Park a block away are bonuses.
