Step into the piazza and the white marble front is wider than any photo suggests, bristling with spires. Inside it is dim and cool, with stained-glass light pooling between enormous columns. The real fun is upstairs: take the stairs or the lift and you walk on the sloping marble roof itself, threading between pinnacles and statues, close to the gilded Madonnina on top. On a clear day you can see over the Galleria's glass roof to the Porta Nuova towers and, on the horizon, the Alps.
