The flagship hotel of the Crown complex on the Yarra's south bank, where the casino, restaurants and luxury shops run one into the next. It's often named the top stay in town, and photos of the city skyline from river-side rooms come up again and again. At night the flame towers along the promenade and the Southbank lights are right outside. The catch is age: it opened in 1997, and some furniture shows it. Rates swing hard, AUD 380–450 on most Wednesdays we checked, but close to AUD 900 on 28 October and 14 November.
