Marrakech had a Jewish community for centuries, and the Mellah still holds its traces. At Miaara, rows of whitewashed rectangular tombs stand on dry ground. At the gate the caretaker hands men a kippah. The nearby Lazama (Slat al-Azama) synagogue is a small building of rooms around a courtyard, and you go in when the caretaker opens it. It is the other Marrakech that souk-hopping tends to miss.
