A 45-metre neo-Gothic iron tower rising out of the Baixa grid. Since 1902 it has carried people between downtown and the Carmo hill above, and it is still run by Carris as public transport. Two wood-and-brass cabins go up and down; at the top you cross an iron footbridge to Largo do Carmo. The round platform above looks over Rossio, the castle and Baixa's straight streets.
