Alfama came through the 1755 earthquake mostly intact, so its lanes still twist like a medieval town: laundry over stairways, old women on chairs by the door, the smell of grilled sardines. Miradouro de Santa Luzia sits under blue azulejo panels and bougainvillea, looking over orange roofs, the Tagus and the white dome of the Pantheon, with Portas do Sol square right next door. For sunset, climb north to Senhora do Monte on top of Graça hill, one of the highest lookouts in the city, with the castle, downtown and river all in front of you as the sun drops.
