The lights drop in a tiny dining room, a singer in a black shawl steps into the middle, and as the round-bodied Portuguese guitar starts up even the cutlery goes quiet. Fado sings saudade, a longing for something gone, and is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list. You can do it two ways: dinner at a fado house in Alfama or Bairro Alto, with sets through a 2–3 hour meal, or a short show of about 50 minutes with a welcome drink. In the daytime, the Fado Museum in Alfama plays old recordings and shows the guitars, which makes the night make more sense.
