The white tower facing you as you leave Kyoto Station looks like a lighthouse but was modelled on a candle. From the deck at 100 metres you can pick out Kiyomizu-dera on the eastern hills, the five-storey pagoda of To-ji and, on clear days, the Osaka direction. Kyoto has so few tall buildings that even this height lays the whole city out flat. A basement bathhouse and the Kyoto Tower Sando food hall share the building, handy on arrival or departure day.
