Thanks to spring water off Mt Rokko and the sea air, the Nada coast has brewed more sake than anywhere in Japan for centuries. Big names such as Hakutsuru and Kiku-Masamune have opened old brewhouses as museums, mostly free. Hakutsuru's museum fills a Taisho-era wooden storehouse with giant cedar vats, koji rooms and pressing frames, staffed by life-size figures. After the tour you taste a few at the shop and walk on to the next brewery.
