At 5:46am on 17 January 1995, the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake flattened much of Kobe. Here a large-screen theatre recreates the moment expressways and buildings collapsed, then you walk through a model of the burned-out streets, twisted wreckage, and objects and testimony left by survivors. Knowing what this shiny port looked like some thirty years ago changes how you see the broken quay in Meriken Park. The building is a modern glass box, with hands-on disaster-prevention exhibits upstairs.
