About an hour by bus from central Kaohsiung

A Hakka town northeast of Kaohsiung. You can try making an oil-paper umbrella at a workshop, then cycle or ride a scooter past rice paddies and old tobacco-curing barns. Lunch is Hakka flat rice noodles and clear shaved ice. Shade is scarce, so bring a hat and water in summer. The trip each way takes about an hour, so plan to give it the whole day.
