Past the gate the path turns to crunchy red volcanic scoria and ancient nutmeg-yews close over your head. Moss and vines wrap every trunk, so the forest stays cool and dim even at noon. In the middle stands the 'New Millennium Nutmeg Tree', said to be over 800 years old, and everyone stops in front of it. Go just after rain, when the wood and earth smell strongest and the forest feels twice as deep.
