The 19th-century police headquarters, magistracy and prison were restored and reopened as an arts compound in 2018. The big courtyard ringed by red-brick blocks was once the prisoners' exercise yard, and a few cells have been kept with their iron doors and narrow bunks so you can step inside. A contemporary art wing clad in what looks like stacked metal blocks sits next to the jail, with cafés, a bookshop and bars tucked in between. Most of it is free, which makes it a good place to duck out of the heat while walking Central.
