From the 4th to the 13th century the Champa kingdom worshipped Hindu gods here, and it became a UNESCO site in 1999, the same year as Hoi An. Clusters of red-brick towers stand in a valley ringed by hills, the bricks fitted so tightly that nobody is quite sure what bonded them. Bombing during the Vietnam War brought many down, and craters and rubble are still scattered among the ruins. An electric shuttle takes you from the ticket office into the valley, then you walk forest paths from group to group, and with good timing you catch a traditional Cham dance show.
