This is where the war ended: on 30 April 1975 North Vietnamese tanks rammed the front gates. Built in 1966 as South Vietnam's presidential palace, its meeting rooms, reception halls and banqueting room still wear their 1960s modernist furniture. The best part is underground, where low concrete corridors lead past radio rooms and a command centre with war maps still on the walls. A helicopter sits on the roof, two of the tanks from that day stand in the grounds, and the lawns are usually busy with students in graduation gowns.
