1 Trang Tien Street, a 10-minute walk east along Trang Tien from the southeast corner of Hoan Kiem Lake

Built by the French colonial government over a decade from 1901 and modelled on the Palais Garnier, it stands in the middle of a wide roundabout, cream columns, balconies and twin domes all visible in one frame from the opposite pavement. Trang Tien Street, which runs from the lake to the theatre, is lined with bookshops, galleries and the Trang Tien ice-cream shops that have been going since 1958. Come at 8 or 9am for photos; after that the tour buses and groups take over the steps.
