Step off the bus and the entire hillside across the road is pampas grass. A narrow path runs up the middle, and the stalks rise over your head and hiss in the wind. Late September it's silver; by November it's gone gold, and with the low sun behind it the whole field glows. The slope is burned every spring to keep it healthy, so March and April show only black ground. Mid-October is right in the sweet spot.
