A gondola from the lakeside Hakone-en station reaches the top of Mt Komagatake in about seven minutes. Lake Ashi shrinks beneath you on the way up, and on a clear day Mt Fuji hangs straight ahead. At the summit stands Hakone Motomiya, the mountain shrine, with a wide viewing plaza around it. It is windy and noticeably colder than down by the water.
