A white-and-green marble front stands at the end of a wide square, and inside, the floor and walls turn into a roll call of famous tombs: Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli and Rossini are buried here, and Dante has a memorial. The novelist Stendhal felt so dizzy here that 'Stendhal syndrome' was named after him. The chapels by the altar keep frescoes by Giotto, and out in the cloister is Brunelleschi's Pazzi Chapel.
