From the top of the dome you can't see the dome, which is why so many people climb Giotto's tower next door instead. It's 414 steps and about 85 metres, a little lower than the dome, but there are rooms on each level to catch your breath, and from the top terrace the red dome sits straight in front of you. The outside is white marble banded with green and pink, set with carved hexagonal panels, worth a look even from the ground. A roughly four-year restoration began in March 2026; the top stays open, but scaffolding may block part of the view.
