- Address
- Piazza del Duomo. The dome climb has its own door on the cathedral's north flank (on your left with your back to the Baptistery)
You turn out of a narrow lane and a wall of white, green and pink marble fills the view. The cathedral itself is free, but what most visitors are after is the top of Brunelleschi's red-brick dome, finished six centuries ago. It's 463 steps with no lift. Halfway up you walk a gallery around the inside of the dome, right under Vasari's Last Judgement fresco, then squeeze up a slanting staircase between the two shells of the dome until the city's rooftops open up on every side. You can only climb at the time printed on your ticket, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.
