Tucked down a 16th-century close just below the castle gates. Dark oak panelling, leather and candlelight make the room feel like an old witch story, and it's long been Edinburgh's special-occasion booking. There's also a garden-side room, the Secret Garden. Signatures include tournedos Rossini, Glenfeshie red deer, Angus beef tartare and haggis. The set lunch at £39.50 for two courses or £49.50 for three is the gentler way in.
