You walk into the Grand Gallery, a white cast-iron hall under a glass roof. Dinosaur skeletons, Dolly the cloned sheep, relics of Scottish kings and the giant Millennium Clock that springs to life at set times are all under one roof, and entry is free. Take the lift to the Level 7 roof terrace and the castle and Old Town roofs are right at eye level. On a wet day it's the best refuge in town.
