The red gondola takes under four minutes to reach the 412 m top of Mount Srđ. From up there the Old Town is a small dish of orange roofs inside its ring of walls, with Lokrum and the Elaphiti islands scattered across the sea. At sunset the sun drops behind the islands, the walls go pink and then the street lamps flick on. The Napoleonic Imperial Fort on the summit holds a museum on the fort's defence during the 1990s Croatian War of Independence; the cable car itself was wrecked then and only ran again from 2010.
