The Rector of the Ragusan Republic held office for exactly one month and couldn't leave the palace except on state business, a rule designed to stop anyone getting comfortable with power. Past the carved capitals of the front loggia is a stone courtyard ringed by a two-storey arcade, which turns into a chamber-music venue during the Summer Festival. Upstairs are the rector's office and bedroom, old pharmacy jars, and rooms of Republic-era paintings and furniture. The bust in the courtyard is the merchant Miho Pracat, the only commoner the Republic ever honoured with a monument.
