A knight in armour, Roland (Orlando), stands atop the stone column with sword in hand, set up in 1418. It stood for the freedom of the Republic of Ragusa, and proclamations were read from its foot. The knight's forearm was the city's unit of length, the ell, about 51 cm. In the middle of the square it frames the Bell Tower and St Blaise's Church in the same shot.
