Kotor is a small walled town at the very back of a bay where the mountains drop straight into the sea. Its walls zigzag up the rock behind town to the Fortress of St John, and after roughly 1,350 steps the whole bay and the rooftops lie beneath you. Inside, marble lanes and little squares tangle into a maze, with cats sitting about like they own the place. Tours usually add Perast on the way, with its tiny island church out in the bay. You're crossing out of Croatia, so bring your passport.
