When Dubrovnik is bursting, this little harbour town is the easy escape by boat. It sits on the site of the ancient Greek and Roman town of Epidaurum, whose refugees, the story goes, went on to found Dubrovnik. Yachts crowd the palm-lined harbour promenade, and the coastal path around the pine-covered peninsula is dotted with people swimming off the rocks. On the hilltop cemetery stands the white Račić family mausoleum by sculptor Ivan Meštrović, and painter Vlaho Bukovac's birthplace is in the village.
