Christian IV built this Dutch Renaissance castle as a summer house in the early 1600s. Room after room of tapestries, gilded ceilings and a mirror cabinet, but the stairs are narrow and the rooms small, so it feels like a king's home more than a palace. The highlight is the basement treasury: the Danish crowns, coronation swords and the emerald, pearl-ruby and diamond jewel sets glittering behind glass. Up in the Long Hall, three life-size silver lions guard the coronation thrones.
