The 606 is a disused elevated freight line turned into a 4.3 km trail in the air. It's rougher than New York's High Line, with far more locals on bikes and parents with strollers than tourists. You walk level with the second-floor windows of brick two-flats, then come down near Damen Avenue into Wicker Park. Around the six-way crossing of Milwaukee, North and Damen are vintage clothing shops, record stores, independent bookshops and cafés, while the Blue Line rattles past overhead. It's Chicago neighbourhood life, nothing like the downtown towers.
