Hundreds of bamboo chairs sit under the trees by the lake: men slapping down mahjong tiles, grandmothers cracking sunflower seeds. The century-old Heming Teahouse sits in the middle of it all; pick a tea, take a seat, and staff keep topping you up with hot water from long-spouted kettles. Ear cleaners stroll between tables clinking their steel tongs. Deeper in the park is the marriage market, where parents pin their children's profiles to umbrellas, and most visitors wander through it too.
