From the Buda bank the 268-metre neo-Gothic block looks as if it is floating on the river. Work started in 1885 and ran until 1904, and there are 691 rooms inside. The tour climbs a gilded ceremonial staircase, passes into the Dome Hall, where the Holy Crown of Hungary sits in a glass case between two motionless guards with drawn sabres, and finishes in the old upper-house chamber. Look for the numbered brass holders along the corridor windows: members used to park their cigars there before going in to debate.
